From Dual‑Use to Defence - How XPONENTIAL Europe Is Redefining Responsibility in Autonomous Technology

Autonomous systems, robotics and artificial intelligence no longer belong to the realm of experimentation. They are operational realities—used every day in logistics, disaster response, infrastructure protection and, increasingly, in security and defence contexts. At XPONENTIAL Europe 2026, this reality is no longer treated as a side note. It is the headline.

Taking place from 24 to 26 March in Düsseldorf, XPONENTIAL Europe brings together industry, start‑ups, research institutions, authorities and end users to discuss how uncrewed and autonomous technologies are moving from civil innovation into safety‑ and defence‑relevant applications. The defence focus of the event is growing—and deliberately so.

Orientation in a Rapidly Changing Landscape

“The industry needs orientation and concrete application perspectives,” says Malte Seifert, Director Metals & Autonomous Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf. That statement captures a broader challenge facing Europe’s autonomy ecosystem: technological capability is advancing faster than regulatory clarity, operational doctrine and societal consensus.

XPONENTIAL Europe positions itself as a forum where these gaps can be addressed—not through abstract debate, but through real‑world use cases, operational experience and cross‑sector dialogue. Defence is not treated as a separate silo, but as part of a continuum that runs from civilian applications to security‑critical deployments.

Dual‑Use as the Common Denominator

Many of the technologies showcased at XPONENTIAL Europe operate at the intersection of civil and defence use. Autonomous systems, robotics, sensor technology, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity solutions are already deployed to protect critical infrastructure, support emergency services, enable maritime surveillance or assist in disaster relief. The same technologies, often with minimal modification, play a role in defence and military contexts.

This dual‑use reality is not framed as a contradiction, but as a responsibility. Defence, in the context of XPONENTIAL Europe, is understood as the responsible development and application of technologies that can contribute to Europe’s security—without losing sight of ethical, legal and societal implications.

This perspective shapes both the exhibition floor and the accompanying conference and stage formats.

The Bundeswehr Enters the Dialogue

A central element of this year’s defence focus is the German Drone‑Defence & Innovation Forum (GDIF), hosted by the Bundeswehr at the Innovation Theater in Hall 1 on 25 March 2026. For one day, the stage becomes a platform for short impulses, project insights and moderated discussions that are open to all visitors.

The goal is exchange—not one‑way communication. Developers, operators, start‑ups, established industry players and research institutions are invited to engage directly with defence users.

“Unmanned systems are a central factor in modern security and defence architectures,” says Flotilla Admiral Christian Bock, Head of the Bundeswehr Innovation Centre in Erding. Recent international security discussions, he notes, have underlined how critical it is to connect operational experience, technological development and political framework conditions. The Bundeswehr is therefore actively seeking dialogue with industry and research.

A British‑German Perspective on Security

The defence conversation at XPONENTIAL Europe extends beyond national borders. The British Chamber of Commerce Germany (BCCG) is using the event to host the closed‑door dialogue format “Defence meets Wirtschaft”, bringing together representatives from politics, business and defence in a non‑public setting.

The aim is strategic alignment. According to the BCCG, recent statements by German and British political leaders highlight the importance of bilateral cooperation, as well as close coordination with European and NATO partners. The support of XPONENTIAL Europe by both German and British defence institutions provides a foundation for sustained strategic and technical exchange.

More Than a Defence Show

What XPONENTIAL Europe demonstrates is that innovation, security and responsibility are no longer separable domains. By embedding defence into a broader trade fair and conference concept, the event creates an interdisciplinary space where boundaries between civil and military, research and application, regulation and deployment are actively negotiated.

The result is not a showcase of hardware alone, but a reflection of how autonomous technologies may shape Europe’s future—if they are developed with clarity, cooperation and responsibility.
